“Wifi can’t find a valid IP address”
Are you getting this message on your Windows 10 computer? Can’t get connection to Wifi. I had a friend with this problem which was difficult to resolve. Eventually via YouTube a solution was found. The problem is with something called “Winsock” and what is that ?
In computing, the Windows Sockets API (WSA), which was later shortened to Winsock, is a technical specification that defines how Windows network software should access network services, especially TCP/IP. It defines a standard interface between a Windows TCP/IP client application (such as an FTP client or a web browser) and the underlying TCP/IP protocol stack.
To resolve this follow these steps:-
1. Go to start and use search
2. Type “cmd” which is the Command Desktop
3. Before clicking on it right mouse click or if using a tablet hold down over Command Desktop
4. Select ” Run as administrator”
5. Type cd c:\
6. Type c:\windows\system32
7. Then add c:\windows\system32\netsh winsock reset
8. A message will appear saying you have successfully reset winsock
9. Restart your computer and your wifi should now work !
Gaming – Xbox One S
Yes, you guessed! I upgraded to an Xbox One S with Kinect 2 this Christmas. I have been a keen gamer , mostly on Fifa but some car games like Need for Speed SHIFT and Horizon 2. If that leaves some of you none the wiser don’t worry – essentially football and cars.
On the plus side I can watch Blu-Rays and play games without using discs. The image quality is superb and more fluent than on the Xbox 360. Setting up took an hour though downloading Fifa 17 took that long!
On the deficit side I was underwhelmed by the fact it doesn’t backward chain all my Xbox 360 games. This means I need to keep my old setup to use some of my favourite Xbox 360 Kinect games. Also the Kinect doesn’t work with Xbox One and needs a) an adaptor and b) a Kinect 2. So if you consider uopgrading bear those facts in mind.
People commented on the square box design as being surprisingly boring. But to me its neater and more like my other devices. But beauty is in the eye of the beholder! That is superficial but important to some users.
So is it thumbs up or thumbs down on the Xbox One S. All things considered the Xbox One S is the future for Microsoft. I had been putting off the upgrade as not being so necessary but when I saw that my local supermarket has stopped stocking Xbox 360 games. The graphics and the new Kinect games have some great features such as clearer and more detailed photo image. Also, for those who don’t want to have their ears bashed with noise there is a great headset that connects to your wireless controller which is very comfortable. I must say these additions come at a price! Not cheap! So factor any of things when considering doing this. I haven’t mentioned Playstation but this may be the better buy if you are starting from new into gaming or if you are a Playstation player.
Making use of Android Mobile Devices
Sorry its been a while since I wrote a blog. This is partly due to Christmas and partly due to not having time to write something. That aside I’d like to share some ideas on how to make use of small 7inch Android mobiles like the Nexus. Being known by others as the “IT guy” I have been getting equipment from a retired gentleman! He has handed me a few linux and Android devices. So I embarked on a project to discover how to use them.
What I like about them is their size and the screen display. Both are ideal for ebook readers and with the Kindle app I can take my books and daily reading with me wherever I go! They are great for that and would encourage anyone with these older devices to consider using them for that.
I thought having just a back facing camera a disadvantage but then its ideal for using as a communication tool as for Skype and Zoom. Zoom if you don’t know is a great communication tool that doesn’t drop signal like Skype tends to do now as its a busy service.
You might also wish to make some notes or list some jobs to do. Google Keep is brilliant for that. I have even made notes at conferences using Google Keep. Using services that span any device means that goes with you wherever you login or whatever device you use. This is handy if you have a device you use but it wasn’t the one you had that note on. Bummer! Not so with cloud-based services. Login and pick-up where you left off!
Amazon Music has impressed me when I discovered that I could stream a range of different artists on my Nexus and to create playlists that I could login to and use on my other mobile devices. But you do need an Amazon Prime account to do this!
I haven’t done this because I don’t need to but there is the possibility of streaming media such as Amazon Prime Video and Netflix through this little 7 inch screen. The smallness sounds restrictive but when on a train or plane with not much room this is ideal especially immersive if you have a headset as these devices come with an ear socket.
So… make the most of your older tech! Give them a new lease of life by designating them as ebooks, communication tools and media streamers!
