CHATGPT

This is an Artificial Intelligence natural language tool that automates processes by the user asking questions, This could be very useful for those with neurodiversity who find getting their ideas down on paper slow and laborious due to spelling and processing errors.

The creation of articles takes a few seconds and the responses are accurate up to 2021 when the language engine was made. Important to not that on the version I was using. There is now a ChatGPT-4 which gives even more functionality. If you want to see an example I asked it to write about itself and the link below takes you to the response.

what a great time! – the dyslexia show

It certainly was a great time! So many good sessions and all the dyslexic organisations and suppliers under one roof was very impressive. Apart from the networking it was a great time to team up with people I have worked with and am working with.

It was a full event for my session on Assistive Technology in the classroom and workplace and I saw people making notes about the apps and hardware I recommended. It’s all in the presentation as well.

I think a bonus was Comic Con was taking place at the same time so seeing someone with a giant squirrel on their back and a lady dressed as a cone covered in flowers certainly adds the surrealness of this event.

Hope to see you next year! Keep up the good work!

Dark Themes and their effectiveness for Visual Impairment

Up to now I have not taken much attention to Dark Themes for my devices. I first encountered them on Android devices where you can turn the whole device from a white background to black fonts to black backgrounds with white fonts over the whole system.

Microsoft have introduced this to Microsoft 365 . To turn your device PC or other devices into a dark theme for Microsoft Office 365 go to Options and select Dark under themes. This doesn’t turn the whole PC into a dark theme but will do this for any Microsoft product. And it does it across all the apps instantly. If you don’t like the effect then you can switch it off easily enough by reversing the process.

Effect on Visual Impairment

Quite by chance whilst working with visual impaired clients I found that adding this feature reduced headaches and made the text clearer to navigate than the traditional white background . If this is the case its worth trying with your visually impaired clients yourself.

What’s the cost?

Nothing. It’s part of your Microsoft 365 package. It might be worth trying for other types of need such as Dyslexia. Does it help with their need? Let me know on this blog post.

Registry issue in word 2013

Many people believe they should run only the latest software on a new laptop. I had a client who was running Offcie 2013 on their new Windows 11 laptop. It’s been running for months now with no hiccups today where the machine got into a pickle and stopped loading Office 2013. It was showing there was no word running so after a search on the internet I did get lucky and found this article which solved the problem. The registry was giving false information so removing the date using this method enbale the program to run again. You have to log back into Microsoft 2013 and then it will run again.

Here are the instructions for all versions of Word:-

To delete the Word Data registry subkey, follow these steps:

  1. Exit all Office programs.
  2. Type regedit in the Search box (in Windows 10, Windows 8.1, or Windows 8) or in the Start Search box on the Start menu (in earlier versions of Windows), and then press Enter.
  3. Locate the following registry subkey, as appropriate for the version of Word that you are using.Word versionRegistryWord 2016 or laterHKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Word\DataWord 2013HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Word\DataWord 2010HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Word\DataWord 2007HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\DataWord 2003HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Word\Data
  4. Select Data, and then select Export on the File menu.
  5. Name the file Wddata.reg, and then save the file to the desktop.
  6. On the Edit menu, select Delete, and then select Yes.
  7. Exit Registry Editor.
  8. Start Word.

If Word starts and works correctly, you have resolved the problem (a damaged Word Data registry key). You may now have to change several settings to restore your favorite options in Word.

If the problem is not resolved, restore the original Word Data registry subkey, and then try the next option.

NB Do not try this if you are not confident or not sure that is the problem
