workplace by facebook

Facebook have introduced a new chat area. It’s called workplace and as yet I haven’t added in contacts as I work as a sole trader. I just deciding how I can I use it. It may be better to just allow a few people into my workplace. If anyone wants to join in this experiment then please reply to this post and send me your email.

SOLID

What is SOLID? It’s the brainchild of Sir Tim Berners-Lee who wants a new kind of web where ideas can be shared freely with no restrictions or rules as such. This is a risk. But when listening to him on Monday evening at the lecture at the Business Design Centre it was clear that Sir Tim thinks we need a mid-course correction for the worldwide web he invented. Hence this idea – SOLID.

So how can I describe SOLID? It feels like a wiki and yet it’s a personal cloud storage area. There are contacts lists, folders, files, documents. A place to store things. A place to share things. Public and private. It feels very, very basic and geeky with areas where code is listed for your site – presumably to share with others what you have built.

And that’s the key! It’s true free content with no control and stripped to its essential component. I still trying to get my head around it so to begin with I using it for a project to do with training in Assistive Technology. Keep everyone posted.

“Assistive Technology That Works!”

Claro Phoneme Generator

My colleague Martin Litten developed this out of experience and teaching practise in India. The construction of words needs a technical approach which requires understanding of the component parts of a word. Dyslexic students do struggle with strategies that are phonetically driven but actually have quite poor understanding of these elements. This free tool can be used on any browser and is really a tool for learning. I advise you read the guide on it’s use. Not every word you type in works but it concentrates on those commonly mis-spelt words that dyslexic learners have. The students can repeat the words and hear them over and over till you fully see understand that word’s construction
