Testing is a key to success ( Hamilton House Newsletter)

Testing that leads to action that meets the needs of the individual is vital for mapping out a planned intervention programme. To establish to baseline to work from and map out a learning journey for the individual pupil. The newsletter shares  news on how funding is in direction proportion to levels of SEN pupils identified and raises how schools can afford to test given they have reduced funds to have the expertise at hand. AAS is on hand to give reasonably costed assessment and map a route for intervention. Service to our client is paramount to ongoing progress. Quick fixes and one off assessments aren’t nearly as effective as ongoing assessment and provision approaches in my opinion. Anway, this is what Hamilton House are saying.

When funding is cut, the number of children with SEN falls. And when additional funding is available, the number of children with SEN rises.

The problem is somewhat obvious, but what is the solution?

I received a press release just the other day reporting on some interesting (though not surprising) research carried out by Bath Spa University.

The research cites a sharp drop in the number of children in schools with special educational needs which, yet again, appears to be a response to government policy changes and increasing pressures on school budgets.

Quite understandably, without funding schools cannot offer testing for children with SEN, whether this be for autism, ADHD or specific learning differences, to name just a few. Which also means that the additional support and resources for these pupils is limited too.

But clearly schools do have funding, just not a lot of it, so using the likes of an educational psychologist to get pupils tested or screened for SEN can be far too costly and hence we see the above trend.

And it seems that the waiting list for an appointment with an educational psychologist may indeed be getting longer, particularly when we consider the results of a survey which has revealed that 85% of AEP members reported “substantial” increases in workloads.

So what is the solution? Many will argue that in identifying the condition or difficulty it is possible to provide the right support in the classroom – which makes the identification somewhat important. Yet it is the support in the classroom that will raise pupils’ attainment and not the statement of SEN itself.

It is for this reason that many schools are now, more than ever, using the testing services (and indeed, supporting resources) that private organisations offer (I’ll put some links at the bottom). Such testing services are typically much more affordable and will help achieve the end goal: raising the attainment levels of pupils’ with SEN.

Jolanta Lasota, Chief Executive of Ambitious about Autism, explains the need to focus on support rather than numbers:

“The SEN reforms are about supporting young people with autism and other SEN being able to thrive and achieve at school – not about an arbitrary change in the way that we classify SEN. If pressure on budgets is driving schools to reduce the number of children they identify as having SEN that is deeply worrying.

“Identification of SEN should be based on an assessment of a child’s needs and nothing else. We mustn’t let the debate about numbers distract us from delivering the best possible additional educational support to the children that need it.”

Office 2016

Just uploaded the latest incarnation of office onto my equipment as I have an Office 365 on license. A free upgrade is for present users of Office 365. Initial impressions are:-

  • easy to load on all equipment
  • clean interface and tablet option available
  • can’t see many new features but lots of connectivity both with sharing on social media as well as on the cloud through onedrive and sharepoint sites
It does replace your old office programs though so if you want both to run side by side that I don’t think is possible. I personally like the new cleaner look and it works brilliant on my Windows Surface Pro 3.

Tumblr

tumblr

Tumblr is not as well known as some of the other social networks but it is quite powerful as you see the tools available to use. You also are linked to a blog where all your content goes as well as a place where you connect to your audience. It’s a  good way to setup a dialogue with your audience too! A little more easier than wordpress as you have to scroll a considerable distance before you find the comment window! Try it out for yourself. My tumblr username is “mylespilling123”

Here is a link to my tumblr bog:-

I will also use it to store all the posts I am doing at https://aas123.com/blogs

Make use of “sharing,” on WordPress

Sharing on WordPress if you are a wordpress user allows what you blog to be “sent” to your other social media sites. This is simple and powerful to do. Tp set up automatically go to Admin and find Sharing. You can now set up the relevant social media sites by linking your social media web addresses to the relevant service. Also you can set up icons for these social media sites so that you can send directly from your post to sites where you think it may target a particular audience. Yay! Very quick and powerful.

Hootsuite – Social Media Organiser

With all the multitude of information streaming to you over the internet keeping track of it can be a time-conusming and daunting task. Hootsuite can help. I was pleasantly surprised at the range of social media it can track and it has the flexibility to add them. Thus, my present mantra of everything in one place really works with this product to track my social media such as facebook, twitter, linkedin, pinterest, google+. The free version can do all this which makes it very practical. Organising your streams through a set of tabs you can stay up to date with all your social media sites and manage them by scheduling posts to send out – even works with mailchimp! Perfecto!!

Organising with a Google Account

A google account is free and allows you to setup a browser and apps consistently across multiple devices. I sign into my google account through Google.co.uk or Google.com and this sets Chrome up to look the way I want it across my devices. iChrome is an extension to Chrome that allows widgies to display – I use Google Keep to display information to help my organisation and to do for current tasks I am working in, Being visual iChrome is suitable for dyslexic learners who are visual learners or dyspraxic users who struggle with finding things due to poor organisational skills. New widgets can be found on the Chrome Store and these can be added into your iChorme page.

Google+ has had a re-vamped . I use this to create custom pages to suit different target groups. It’s like a running history of things I find useful. The interface allows me to add text, photos, links , video ( either my own or Youtube) an event I  want to publicise and a poll to discover what people think.

Now the real beauty of all this is that I have access to this on ALL my different laptops, desktops, ipads, iphone, android and chromebook devices. That means all the above available to me via the internet at all times in all places on all machines. Now that’s making use of the cloud isn’t it?

Dyslexia Awareness Week – 11th-17th October

Hamilton House logo

Dyspraxia Awareness Week
(11th – 17th October 2015)

2015’s National Dyspraxia Awareness Week, which will take place between 11th and 17th October, will not just aim to heighten the awareness of dyspraxia but will also explore the “diagnosis divide” between girls and boys.

This focus comes as a result of the organisers of the Dyspraxia Foundation learning that a significant number of females are not receiving a diagnosis of dyspraxia as readily as males.

So why is it that females can go undiagnosed throughout their lifetimes, despite obvious issues with their development and co-ordination? The truth is that the Dyspraxia Foundation, along with other researchers, don’t know. But they are keen to find out.

They hope that the results of a new national survey will help to explain why many females seem to “get by” in life without diagnosis and support, despite falling over frequently and displaying a lack of spatial awareness (among other symptoms).

If you would like to get involved with this year’s Dyspraxia Awareness Week, make sure to join in with “Funky Friday” (16th October) where your pupils are encouraged to wear their most colourful clothes in order to help raise awareness of dyspraxia.
